DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Richard Petty is ready to put his foot where his mouth is.
Not put his foot in his mouth, mind you, but on a gas pedal, that is.
In an appearance Friday morning on the Fox News Channel, Petty said he’s ready to come out of retirement to race Danica Patrick, who turns 32 next month.
The only reason why Danica Patrick is currently leading the Daytona 500 is because it is last years race, and we know that what Petty said is true at the end.
Hopefully we can get a cloud break and return to some real racing.
I have all the respect in the world for "The King", but even if he was 40 years younger, he could never keep up with the top 30 drivers of today's NASCAR. He would be in the back of the pack, just like he was in his final years of driving before he retired "the first time".
Danica did well yesterday until she got caught up in someone elses wreck. I realize that is part of pack racing and also part of being in the mid pack or farther back. She did lead some laps though during green flag pit stops, but hey, that's something.
i think in the end petty is right about danica, she is a good driver, but right now she is NOT a good racer. she needs to start winning some races, or at least finishing much higher on average than she has done. this season will be telling.
Yeah, Petty was correct. It's not a big deal. Danica is an okay driver but lacks the winning attitude/spirit/whatever. Just like most okay drivers. The good and great have that extra intangible that leads to winning. She lacks that. A lotta guys in the paddock lack that and that's okay. She's good for NASCAR and the cultural shift going on. Which Petty fully acknowledges to his credit.
This race thing is a red herring. All things equal Petty would beat her. Stewart knows this as does everyone else.
This race wont happen because it would not do Danica any favors. Suppose she did race Richard and won, her critics would say, so what.. she beat a 75 year old man.. and god forbid she lost. Its a no win situation for her.
I like Danica, I really do and in fact bought a Danica shirt at the race Sunday (for my daughter) but I think her chances of winning a race are very slim as are about 75% of the other drivers in Cup.. She never really came close (that I can remember) to winning a race in Nationwide, she certainly can't win in CUP...
If she does win though, I will be pretty happy for her..
