One of my favorite quotes about racing came from Buddy Baker. When talking about a nameless driver who was having a problem negotiating a certain track, Baker said he was doing good until the first corner when he "ran out of talent".

You know.. Something strikes me as odd about this whole thing..

How in the world do you not know you have terminal, inoperable lung cancer until a month before it kills you?

I heard the story from Jerry Punch on NASCAR radio this AM about Buddy having the brain bleed for several months.. I guess he was just so tough and dealt with any pain that he had.. But, it sucks that his toughness covered his illness. The odds are though, he had a pretty good ending vs had doctors gotten involved.. BP and Bobby Hamilton both wound up dying from the chemo vs the cancer.

I never did care for Buddy calling races back in the TNN days, but I absolutely loved him on The Late Shift.. He was far better at that, more relaxed format, than when he tried to tell the stories during a race. Or, more apt.. The format fit his style better.

My MIL at age 92 went in for a check up. She could walk you to death when it came to going places or shopping. Her mind was a lot sharper than mine. Very well spoken, vibrant lady. Her test results came back with issues. They did a scan of her lungs and told her she had cancer. She drove her car and went places like nothing was wrong. She died 2 weeks later. The last 24 hours was the worst. Like you, I had a hard time believing this lady didn't have some kind of indication that her lungs were bad but apparently not. Even after the discovery she didn't slow down at all.

I used to enjoy his euphemisms, metaphors and such.
