Here's what I hate most about NASCAR: they put a carbureted V8-powered engine mated to a manual 4-speed transmission on a RWD tube-frame chassis with a fiberglass shell of a rules-standardized shape and tell me that's a "stock" Toyota Camry or Dodge Intrepid or whatever? Just how much do they intend to insult my intelligence and still expect me to take them seriously?
If you want to see REAL stock car racing, try the World Rally Championship where they actually do use the stock chassis and stock engine block; or better yet, SCCA rally where the cars are not only stock block and chassis, but the cars have to be street-legal. THAT'S stock car racing.
No one is more insane than the japanese drifter NOMURA (here on the right), they speed up to 110-125mph and whack the car sideways, while maintaining inch perfect control of the car.
Gotta disagree -- rally drivers are more insane. They do all of the above, except they do it on gravel and/or snow, with trees or sometimes SPECTATORS(!!) mere feet from the edge of the road -- which, by the way, is usually way narrower than a drift course.
I used to hate it for some of the same reasons, already given, and found it very boring. Then I got hooked, when Johnny Benson almost won Daytona with an unsponsored car. I don't watch many Busch races, but do watch all the Cup and Truck. I like all the drama that goes on off the track with the drivers and owers. Poor Mikey. It also helps if you have a fantasy team.
Nascar= boring, repetetive redneck sport. Of all motorsports, I think Nascar drivers have the least amount of talent. Throw one of those good ol southern boys into a Formula 1 or WRC or LeMans car and watch how "talented" they really are.
WRC is by far the most entertaining form of motorsport, by far. The talent in those drivers (McRae, Kukkonen, Sainz, Solberg, etc) is far superior to those elsewhere. Not only are they super talented, but their "tracks" (mainly dirt/gravel/sometimes paved) are city streets and backroads. For those who dont know, WRC cars are based on streetable cars (although with slightly modified engines and modded trans), but modified. They also require the use of a co-pilot who communicates with the driver regarding the upcoming turns, etc. Most WRC cars use lightning fast SMG transmissions and utilize turbocharged 4 cylinder engines and AWD. They employ several driving types per individual race:grip, drift, etc. Rallies take place across the world and each rally has several different stages. Repairs are done by the driver and co-pilot, if they can fix it (ie, a damaged trans will put them out of the race, but a damaged oil cooler could easily be fixed on the stage). So not only are they super talented drivers, but they also have some mechanical skills, which is also unique to motorsports. My fave rallies are Rally Sweden (snow) and Rally Australia. Monte Carlo and England are also good ones to watch.
Do yourselves a favor and Google the World Rally Championship series and watch some in-car videos. Youll never want to watch Nascrap again.
