Need a car and a loan (credit, buy, money, dealership)

I'm thinking about taking out a loan for a car but I've never actually done it before. I don't really know how this works.. if I go through a separate loan agency other than the dealership do I have to already have the car picked out and ready to buy or can I just ask for a certain amount of money and then they send me a check? I don't really know the process of this. I'm looking at around a 3,000-3,500 dollar loan.

Most banks won't issue a loan that small on a car. You'll need a credit union or a local bank.
