Resetting an internal I/M monitor can require as many as 40 drives cycles and several weeks of driving to reset. However, I/M monitors that require many drive cycles to reset are often waived when determining an emissions pass/fail.

Worth mentioning that some cars have a rather peculiar "drive cycle" - one can Google "Drive Cycle 08 Porsche" or whatever you are working on - you can't just drive the car normally and accomplish a "drive cycle" - frequently you would have to do this in a rural area or do it in the wee hours of the morning if you live somewhere like LA - cold start, idle a bit but not too much, drive off slow for a certain amount of time, coast at 0% throttle but not touch the brakes, accelerate at 50% throttle to 60% throttle for 5 to 8 seconds, then coast down, not touching brake or (as applicable) clutch...you need a fairly open road to do this.

That is why it may take several weeks of normal driving to reset the OBD Readiness Codes.

Below is the 12-minute drive cycle required to reset all of the I/M monitors to Ready Status for VW/Audi (2009).

To reset my 2005 Honda Accord would require some driving I would only attempt at 3:00 am on the interstates around Chicago, and even then it would not surprise me to be asked to take a breath analyzer test. I always opt for the multi-week reset procedure. But as I stated before, one won't fail the emissions test in Illinois if some of the I/M monitors are in the Unready State. (Provided the MIL icon is off, of course.)

When the CEL came on on my 02 Ford Explorer we found out it was a faulty gas cap. Replaced it, problem solved.
