I am trading my trusty Dodge 2500 diesel 4x4 for having work done on our house...it will be going in a few weeks I guess...
So have been looking for a future replacement and have started wondering if another diesel really is worth it.
A little background.
We will be in a rural area,3/4 mile long gravel driveway and 4x4 is necessary at times.
In the future we will need something capable of towing tractor/livestock trailer,etc...not sure when that will be as we first need to get ourselves situated...
Would really like an actual crew cab but extended cab would work...a regular cab would be iffy....but possible I guess.
Hopefully won't be used for any long distances,unlike my current truck that has done the 600+ mile roundtrip to NC hundreds of times in the last few years.
So....is it worth the added upfront cost of a diesel plus the higher cost of the fuel itself or just go with a gas truck that WILL use more fuel to do the same thing but is cheaper?
Was it a 12v you had? I run my 12v on both diesel and grease. You can get a centrifuge filtering system up and running for about $400-500. That easily pays for itself in only a few thousand miles. If you have basic plumbing skills then you will have no trouble setting up a parallel fuel delivery system to the injection pump. These engines require NO modification to run on pure vegetable oil, all that is required is that the oil is preheated to achieve proper viscosity (I do this by rerouting the coolant circuit to the aux. tank). I average about 18mpg (mostly city) and about 24mpg highway.

24 valve.Wish I had bought a 12 valve actually but got a good deal on this one at the time.
It has been a good truck and all and I like having a diesel but things have changed since I bought it...
Back then,diesel was just over $1/gallon and much cheaper than gas...
Now it is the opposite... and you pay a premium upfront to buy a diesel truck even used.
are you lookinh new or used a 6.4 ford F250 would be a freat bargin right now because dealers are trying to clear room for the 2011 with 6.7 power stroke.
I have seen 10K discounts and $2000 in free dealer options on the left over 2010 6.4 power strokes

I do not WANT electronic controls on my vehicle...I do not WANT all the gizmos and gewgaws that break.
Like my tractor...old,uncomplicated and easy to understand and repair...
And cheap.
do you want EFI or carburated
and old mid 70 chevy PU will have nothing in what is consider modren devices just a bench seat and roll up windows. the 4x4 models have manual lock hubs and you can get it with a 6.2 detroit diesel
Well then a 12v is your perfect choice. Whats stopping you? Go out and find one!
