AFAIK, this is the company that makes Supertech oil filters: Champion Laboratories Inc.

To the OP, you may want to consider upping the viscosity of the oil to minimize the consumption. Otherwise, it sounds like you're doing the right things.

At least most of their manufacturing is US based, though who knows how much junk they have that china plant churning out.

Supertech oil filters are actually good. I have used them for yrs. They are better then fram. Next oil change ill spend a few xtra bucks & buy ac delco. The new ST oil filter i bought was half priced. A ST oil filter is 3.00 at walmart, fram is 4.00 & ac/delco is 4.50.

I personally prefer the Pure-1, another good option is the NAPA Gold (made by Champion). AC-Delco are also good and also IIRC Champion manufactured (Champion works to more than one spec, so just because Champion makes 2 different filters you should not assume they are the same) The higher spec filters remove more particles in the first pass than the ordinary ones. That said before I got smart about oil and filters, I used Fram and had no problems.

IIRC Pennzoil bought out Quaker State several years ago.

This is a lightly stressed engine and probably any decent 10-30 oil is fine - I personally might try Castrol High-Mileage in this case.

A few brands that I never hear any mechanic knock are Valvoline, Havoline (Texaco) and Chevron (probably exactly the same as Texaco anymore).

Assuming the car does not burn (much) oil stepping up to Mobil 1 might not be the dumbest idea there in the California heat. Consider what gas costs you every 3000 miles, it's much more than even a relatively expensive oil like the Mobil would cost you. I have seen cars that burnt a little oil burn less Mobil 1.

Your mileage, as always, may vary.

I like QS & i dont burn any oil. I do have a lil oil leak. I have 119k miles. I dont see an reason to buy high milage oil. Regular oil should be just fine. My pet peeve is to always change the oil every 3k miles. Its alot cheaper then a new engine. Dirty oil is not good in a motor & i alway keep my oil pan full. Once many yrs ago i let my 78 mustang go 2 qts low on oil & the lifters started knocking. Not long after i blew a head gasket. The car had 178k miles on it. I bought it for 800.00 with 138k miles. The car got me all over so.ca (incl big bear,ca) for a few yrs. I got 20 mpg in the city (4 cylinder).

I have heard over the years that Slick 50 oil treatment makes engines last longer or is that just a way to sell the product?

No one should waste their money on Slick 50. No really credible data to show it does anything good.

I've had no problem with the Super Tech filters I've used on the entire lifetime of my truck, which has over 300K on the odometer.
