I'm thinking of having our 2001 Toyota Highlander hauled across the country to LA so my daughter can use it her senior year of college. But I'm thinking of alternatives after realizing that it'll cost $1,000 or so. Do people ever lease used cars? I'm thinking that maybe the car rental companies might have such a plan. I'd like to hear of other alternatives, too, which may make sense. Since we don't know if she'll still be out there beyond another year, a short-term fix of 12 months or less would be preferable.
google swap a lease. It allows you to find people willing to sign their lease over to you. Shouldn't be hard to find a car with a few months left. Never used this site so use at your own risk.
man socal has some really unrusted nice classics a $1000 can get you a nice little honda civic. leasing a used car tends to have higher interest rates and very short dealer warranty so getting it checked out before you buy is important.
Ask your daughter to post a notice in college to see if any student wants to fly to where you are, and drive the car back. Some student who might want to go to near there, anyway. Save most of that thousand bucks. Of she can fly up and pick it up herself.
I second the idea for buying her a used Honda Civic. Another reason for doing that over shipping your Toyota Highlander over to CA, would be that gas is a lot pricier there, so a more fuel efficient car would be a better choice.

Yeah, just hand over the keys to a stranger (while it's obviously registered and insured under your name), and hope and pray it will show up unmolested across the country X days later.

Tried to rep you for that but have to spread the love around first. I would definitely not have a kid (who you don't even know) drive the car cross-country, not only can they trash the car, since you own it you are liable for any collatoral damage they may do to other people's cars.
Does the kid *really* need a car for college?
What about Zip car, stuff like that?
Assuming you can find someone to check it out, agreed that there are a lot of good older cars available in the area.
