I got my oil changed today and the dealership was goin to charge me $90 to get a new battery. I said no thanks b'c I thought that was kind of high. Hubby said it sounded about right. He doesn't do price comparisons and I don't know much about cars. Can anybody give me a ballpark range price? I know that it can vary by brand and other factors but for a 2004, Honda Pilot, a $90 batter, is that reasonable? Thanks!

Usually Sears, Walmart have batteries that you could check online. They also come with 60-72 mts warranty as well. Just make sure you know the battery spec.

THe Walmart, Sears installation is free whereas the dealer might charge you labor for the battery change.

My 2 cents

HAHA, I just love dealerships. Chances are you don't even need a new battery.

A standard sears or wallmart battery costs $40 to $50. Takes about 2 minutes to put a battery in a car. Buy one from autozone or something and they will test your old battery and probably put the new one in themselves.

They did a test. Rating said: 550 CCA, can anybody tell if I'm "in trouble" or still ok for another 3000 miles?

Three years old. Why do you need a battery. Most Hondas have a five year battery in them. If you go shop for one, check the differences between ACDelco, NAPA(Exide), and Interstate. All three are very good batteries with good warranties.
As far as the battery test, 550CCA doesn't really tell much. They should be looking for voltage drop. In your case, the battery shouldn't drop below 9.6 volts with a 275 amp load at 15 seconds. If it drops below 9.6 volts, you need a new battery.

Hmm, does this help: 13.00V, 422CCA? Those are the only numbers on the little printout that the guy gave me.

I hate to sound like a "girl" but you lost me there Electron! It's ok, I'll just shop around. I figure when the dealership tell you it's time to get a new battery, I probably still have a ways to go before I REALLY need to replace it. My car is 3 yrs old but it endured some harsh winters in NY. Now it's enduring harsh summers in PHX so when the guy said, "You need a new battery," I guess I wasn't like, "I do? My car is only 3 yrs old!"

Anyway, thanks again for the advice!
