Where are you guys finding Escapes,CRV's,Rav 4s for 3000 lol?

Maybe California has higher prices as with everything else here, but you have to pay atleast 5 to get something that will last you longer than next week.

really I have a lifted 91 F250 4x4 regular cab short box and insurance is dirt cheap for it. why would a Bronco based off a F-series truck platform cost more than 3K a year in insurance?

You are not getting a Rav4 or a 4Runner for $3000. At least not one that runs. And you aren't getting a CRV. I don't know about the Escape.

$3000 gets you a perfect Jeep XJ. That's all. None of these other rigs that have been discussed are $3000 for a good version.

For 3 grand I'd look for a Volvo 850 wagon from 1995-1997. They usually come in right around or under your price point - and there's plenty of them out there. Most Volvo owners, not all, but certainly the majority, take pretty good care of their cars and finding one in VG condition shouldn't be too difficult.

The cars are front wheel drive with an in-line 5 cylinder engine. Quite a few came with turbos which turns a reasonably good driver into a reasonably quick one. Mine has over 200k and all I've done is plugs, oil, filters, belts - the usual stuff. Very comfortable seating as well, and most of them came with a sunroof. Reliable cars that have the interior space equal to anything mentioned above for hauling. The standard, and even the premium sound systems are lackluster and the AC evaporator can be problematic. Make sure the AC is working and add an aftermarket radio would be my advice. I know this wasn't on your list, but just thought I'd throw in my two cents.

Well, it's a darn good thing I'm not looking in California, isn't it?

Good news. I just talked to an old roommate of mine whose husband owns a used car dealership here in town. He's offered to take me to a dealer only car auction to find my vehicle. Having connections is AWESOME!

I'm leaning towards: Mazda Tribute, Ford Escape, Honda CRV, Toyota Rav4, and any 4-door Jeep.

Honda and Toyota would be the obvious choices, but you can't find many with my small budget, and people who own them tend to hold on to them for years.

While reliability is not a HUGE issue, I do need a good, solid car I can take on occasional road trips. Mostly the car will be used to drive to/from work which is only 4 miles one-way.

There are literally thousands of listings for SUV's that fall into my search on Phoenix's craigslist, especially Jeeps.

Mileage doesn't matter (to an extent) and the year doesn't matter at all (I'm looking around 1993-1997).

(Edit: I'm not interested in sedans...or any life lessons.)
I'd be looking for a early to mid 90's Ford Bronco or a Dodge Ram Charger. You would get the simplicity, reliability and cheap maintenance of a American cast iron push-rod V-8. Forget all the modern computer garb, 15 years or so back removes a bunch of BS you don't need or want. Look around, excellent examples that are still very strong and decent can be had for less than 3K even!
