If I'm roadtripping I'm likely to go in and grab a snack and a soda and the like, particularly if I need to use the loo. For local fill-ups, I pump and go.
I generally avoid buying stuff at convenience stores, anymore I just pay at the pump with a credit card. If the card reader is down, I go in but seldom buy anything more than gas.
Although. I think you are right that most of the profit comes from the C-store, not gasoline sales. That said our local farm co-op has a free-standing self-service card only (card lock) gas station in town, and I don't think they are losing money on it.
They also don't have to staff it and keep inventory and the like, and if it's a co-op that probably means nobody's trying to make a living off of it.
Depends if I'm in a hurry or not but usually I pay with a credit card and go. Much more convenient than standing in a line of people, some of whom have 5-6 items and are arguing with the cashier whether the soda is $1.59 or $1.69. I'll pass.
on a long distance trip I will get coffee and a snack along with the self serve gas. I Never do that where I live locally, I gas up whenever the tank gets low but buy nothing else. Where I am (NY City border) there's a lot of self serve/full serve places
Most of the pumps around here don't offer a credit/debit card option. The honor system still lives on! Fill er up, get a coffee and a newspaper and I'm good to go. I always pull off to the side after filling so someone else can use the pump.
Around here a lot of the pumps have a card reader, but I don't know of any within several Counties that make you pay before you pump. I also will pull over after pumping in the rare case someone is waiting, but 99.99% of the time there isn't. Rare to have more than a couple cars at a time getting gas in a town of 1200 people.
However, the Valero's here usually have a pretty good deal on 20oz Sodas, and Monthly Beer Specials. If I get off of work in time, I will stop at the Valero on occassion to pick up a 6 pack.. They have Heineken right now for 6.99 I believe
haha yeah the old free nachos and a 20 once soft drink promotion if you buy 35-40 bucks worth of gas
