Hi,

Anyone out there have any ideas about this?

My 2009 Subaru legacy with 40,000 miles, has a window that does not operate well on the driver's side. I must push the button extremely hard to get the window to go down. Then the window will not go up again until I tap on the bottom of the door. After that, the window operates normally for about 10 times then the process must be repeated.

Is the problem the switch or the motor? I hate to buy the wrong part.

sounds like the switch, but it also sounds hard to tell. I would start with the switch.

I hate to ask ..... did the window not do this 4k miles ago when it was covered under warranty?

The window always seemed to have a delay. I thought that was the normal way it operated. The window still managed to function until recently. I am very busy and rarely use the window so I really didn't realize the problem until 38K miles. In retrospect, I realize that it probably never functioned correctly.

Subaru will not even partially honer the three year warranty, because of the mileage, even though this is an issue unrelated to mileage.

I understand that a new switch costs up to $200!

Yeah ... thats not how warranties work, unfortunately. My cars are always out of warranty by miles before year, just like yours. Sucks, but its the way it goes.

Ouch. That doesn't sound outside the realm of how much the part should cost .. but "ouch" nevertheless.

Maybe with a little luck and lots of care you can take the switch apart and clean it. I do that from time to time on my old Volvo and my old Dodge van.

After a few more e-mails, I convinced Subaru and the dealership to fix it at no cost to me.

Turns out the plug, for the wires connecting the window switch to the window motor, was not firmly attached during manufacture and was barely connected. After securely plugging in, the window now works fine.

Of course the biggest part of that job was taking the door apart and putting it back together again.

Thanks for your advice.

Ouch that would do it and tend to fry the plug. That is what is called a high resistance connection.
