Continuing to campaign for fixing the 89 rather than buy new, as a non-runner you will have a really hard time getting full value from it if you sell. The idea of putting the special interest cars in Hemmings is good.
which is exactly why i am leaning towards keeping the '89s. if i'm gonna have to fix it in order to get a price for it, then i might as well fix it right and keep it. i kind of want to keep the original motor, and i dont want to change from TPI or do anything crazy like that. did i mention that this 21 year old car is like new with less than 30000 miles on it?

Engine and maybe transmission swap would not be all that time consuming.
but every bit as costly as engine and transmission overhauls. and since i want to stay with the TPI set up i dont think that an engine swap is necessary. of course i would want to improve the system by changing to aluminum vortec heads, Edelbrock vortec intake manifold, AS&M TPI runners, ZZ4 cam, but still keeping it a 5.7liter TPI.
have you driven a 5.0 Mustang yet? Do so please. It will seal the deal. These cars are nothing short of amazing, Especially with the brembo package and 3.73 rears. I have a buddy who just bought a new 5.0 .. in the worst possible performance combo. .. convertible(heavier) automatic and 3.15 rear. Dead stock it ran 12.6 and with a tune and sticky tires 12.2's. Absolutely amazing..
well as for the mustang 2011 5.0 GT I would wait atleast 1-1 1/2 years till all the orders go out and the dealers are not selling them for full MSRP anymore then atleast you can go in and get a bit of a deal and have all the little production bugs and stuff worked out of the first series of cars.
.
Most dealers are selling the 5.0's for $3-4 k under list right now.. They are around $31 for mid line optioned right now.. You can get a 3.73 6 speed manual with sync, HID's, 19" wheels, security package for $33k right now.. List price $36k.

So your buddy's car ran faster than every road tested '11 convertible GT I can find, and most GT coupes? That is some serious factory freak he's got.
Amazing.
