Neon has 90,000 miles and Honda Civic has about 180,000.Which would you buy?
I am asking because my friend from France is here for a year.He will go to work here in Atlanta, tour on weekends the Southeast region from New Orleans,Savannah,to Florida etc.He wants a reliable car that will be less likely to breakdown, can be rather small like in France, and that he can sell for the same price in which he purchased it for in a year from now.
I gave him my opinions. But him being French...well lets just say he thinks he knows better than I. So you guys help us out and tell us what you think.

P.S.I am a Volvo 850 fanatic. But maybe not the best car for him. What do you think?

Neither. Find him an old 80's Renault Feugo coupe so he feels right at home, lol.

Generally one would recommend the newest, lowest mileage car, but it all comes down to how well they were maintained. The Neon's of that era weren't "bad" cars, but the Civic, even a 1995 is a better all around car. I think much of this would come down to how they were maintained and any looming major maintenance items like timing belts.

If the civic was well maintained, I would choose that.

Assuming all things being equal, I would pick the Civic. It will also be easier for him to sell when the year is up.

My Daily Driver car is a 01 Neon (Automatic) and has 162k. We bought it new and have taken very good care. Not a single major repair..just regular maintenance items. All parts are plentiful and cheap. I'm on my 4th set of tires. I found (Neon) SRT rims $100 on craigslist. It's not the coolest car in the lot at work, but I get 25-28 mpg (closer to 25 w/17" rims).

The biggest thing with a used car is learning the "history". Was is in the North (bad Winters)? How many owners? How's the interior look?

I have a '91 Shadow, the Neon's predecessor and it still runs great!

If your two choices are between those two specific cars--a specific Neon and a specific Civic, and all else being equal other than the mileage as stated, I'd pick the cheapest of the two. I wouldn't expect much problem out of either one of them for a year's worth of driving.

But, if he does much running in either of them for a year, I don't see him getting back what he paid for either one of them when he sells them.
