I always wondered what's it like to drive a DeLorean DMC-12.

I drove one in 1985 courtesy of a friend from work. Getting in was a challenge for a tall person. You had to position your hindquarters to drop in first then pull your arms and legs in.

The gearshift was a bit high for me and forget being able to see out the rear quarters of the vehicle. You really count on your side view mirrors in that car. You felt cocooned within the car and that feeling took some getting used to.

Head space was limited if you're over 6ft; I had to place to seat recline on an angle that was more than what I wanted in order to have some space between my head and the top of the door.

As for acceleration it was a HUGE disappointment! I think it was a V-6 but not turbo-charged and was able to move the vehicle but no tire-burner. There was a little lean going through corners and the whole vehicle felt quite heavy.

And after taking it through a car wash I found that water seeped in through the top over the passenger side.

All that aside, it is one of the more sexy automobiles ever made and was a pleasure to look at. During the two days I had with the vehicle it NEVER failed to draw attention when we'd stop somewhere. It was a magnet for women who'd fawn over the car and just about beg for a ride; it was crazy!!

A Delorean was the car I drove when I was 19 or so.
It wasn't MY car but the people I was living with at the time, they rather I drive it than their Nissan pickup...

Anyway,it was kind of cool, handled okay but had a clunky shifter and was a pain in the butt to go through a drive through.

My friend and I took it to the curviest road we have in our area and took a 25mph corner at 50mph,did great, came to the next and it spun out and slid through the grass/sand on the side of the road...had to quickly get to a carwash to vacuum it out(dirt flew through the tiny little window within a window) and reinflate a tire.

Also quite difficult to take four people anywhere, ended up two in the passenger seat and one lying across the package tray behind the seats...

Pegged the speedo a few times too,of course it only went to 85mph...

It used a Volvo/Renault/Peugeot V6. I believe it was 3 liter, they would have had better success with the Volvo 4 cylinder 2.4, and it was offered as a turbo. The V6 was a boat anchor, the overhead cams would flat spot in 30,000 miles.

It was underwhelming when it came to power,of course so was almost everything in the early 1980's.

That's misleading. Everyone knows they go at least 88 mph.

Pretty sure Marty managed to get it up to 88 mph...must have been the plutoneum and flux capacitor working overtime - no wait that was for the time circuits.
