At the Mobil station down the street from my apartment about once every 2-3 months I see this older lady (probably 60's) fill up an adorably cute vehicle in perfect condition. it's rust colored, the back has sort of a lopped- off slant(Gremlin like) with 2 moderate sized vertical tail lights with either a small round or square rear window. It's 2 door and looks like a mini Jeep Wagoneer.

I think I looked at the NY State registration sticker in passing and I think it said it was a 1982, but i didn't catch the make

can anyone post any pics if they think they know what i am referring to? I will know if that's the one

thx in advance

A possibility is that it's a "Jeepster" or a "Commando." The early ones (1948-1950) were Jeepsters sold by Willys Overland. In 1966, the Jeepster name was revived as the "Jeepster Commando," which was a different vehicle from the earlier Jeepster. After 1971, the Jeepster name was removed, and the vehicle was sold as the Jeep Commando. I don't have any photos of them, but there are quite a few on-line. If you look up "Jeepster" and "Jeep Commando" on Google, you'll find plenty of results.

The Jeep Commando has a sloped back and vertical lights as mentioned in the OP. That's why it came to mind for me.

If you hadn't mentioned the NY registration, I might have thought you were in Canada and guessed it may have been a Lada Niva, a goofy little 4x4 hatchback that I don't think would even be allowed in the US. I saw one in Niagara Falls a couple of years ago.

OH WAIT...I think I know what it is. AMC Spirit or Eagle Kammback. It was the Gremlin's direct replacement, available with rear or four wheel drive. Naah. It had square taillights. They were sold as 2wd Spirits from '79-'82 and 4wd Eagles from '81-'82. If it's an Eagle, it's a verrrry rare model, according to Wikipedia.
