Ok, I have a 78' K5 4wd, 4" lift with 36" tires. It has a 12 bolt rear end with 373 gears.

The problem is I tore up the gears. Dring up I 81 in Va. the whole wheel and axle slid out and the the truck dropped to the ground. It is sitting at a repair shop now. He wants me to find a whole axle assembly..easy right. Nope not at all. I for the life of me can not find a 12 bolt, 6 lug, with 373 gears.

So I am asking anyone with some knowledge to help...do I put a 10 bolt in? Will a 14 bolt work? I am thinking the mechanic really doesn't want to put to much effort into it since he won't suggest anything..except he can't rebuild.

HELP!!

Thanks for looking and reading.

here this may help and be a better place to ask K5 blazer questions

I would go with the 14 bolt with the 36" tires you are already at it's max. go with a 14 bolt and never have to worry about blowing your rear end out again. heck people with 44" tires run a corporate 14 bolt in swamps with no problems.

problem is your 6-lug rims will be useless with a 8-lug 14-bolt axle unless you convert it with a spacer plate

Thank you for responding.
If I went with the 14 bolt, where do you get a spacer plate?

Another good forum for K5 and Chevy/GMC truck info is 67-72chevytrucks.com (they have a 73-87 (91) Truck/Blazer/Burb forum).

I don't think a 12 bolt it that much stronger than a 10bolt... if you found one for cheap to get by as long as you don't hot rod it.. you could survive until you found something better.

Another problem is that your 3.73 gears are really too high for that size of tires. To get near stock ratio you would need 4.56 or 4.88s. You will also gain some power and MPG back...

I do want to change the gears, but if I changed them in the back I need to change out the front too right?

Right now the truck is sitting 250 miles from me..which is another problem...I just want to get it back to me, and then I can fix it properly.

So what is the fastest fix for this.

I will check out those other forums too..thanks for the referal.

yes I have a 91 ford F-250 witha 6-inch lift 35" tires. I run sterling 10.25 rear end and dana 50 TTB up front for gearing I run 4.11 with a very a aggressive limited slip in the rear end and a 4.10 up front that way the stronger, beefier rear end does a bit more of the work in the mud while off-road.

I had a 76 K5. I would go 8 lug front and rear before using spacer plates.

I am thinking I willl just go with the 14 bolt 8 lug. Instead of spacer plates, I just need to find 8 lug rims for my tires..right???
