Wife is pulling out of a parking space the same time someone else is pulling out on other side. Corner of wife's rear bumper hits rear quarter panel of other vehicle. Wife's car has barely a scrach. Other car has dent in rear quarter panel. They exchange license and insurance information. The other driver is our daughter's preschool teacher too. Other driver gets estimates of $1000-$2000. We aren't going to do anything about our car. We haven't told our insurance anything.
Are we required to tell insurance (this is CA, put this happened on private property)?
Are we obligated to pay for other driver's damage?
Are we obligated to pay for a portion of the damage?
Should the other driver report to insurance and file claim?
If other driver files claim, assuming low deductible (otherwise not worth it), should we pay half of the deductible?
It appears like this was a 50-50 at fault situation. Both backing up and not seeing the other (though my wife is in a huge SUV and other driver is in a very small car - tough to see).
Update: The other driver said she was moving forward, not backing up. Not sure if that means it's 100% wife's responsibility - but it may be. Does that change things?

yeah that means she is saying your wife backed into her and your wife is at 100% fault now.
is there anyway you can find a 3rd party witness?

Actually I think that puts her more in the wrong, not using a mirror she had no excuse.
I would just turn this over to your insurance.
Wife called our insurance. Insurance says they'll pay and our rates will go up about $80/year for three years and we don't have to pay anything. Does this sound right? This was an initial phone call. Wife says we don't even have to pay a deductible. Sounded odd, I thought we always paid a deductible but since the damage was to the other car and no damage to our car, no deductible.
Both cars were moved after the accident, therefore there's no way to tell who's at fault. In hindsight, neither should have been moved after impact intil a third party (police) could be summoned. But, since they were moved, seems that you're at the mercy of whatever the insurance companies decide. Fortunately, nobody was injured but your insurance company still needs to know the details.

I suppose that's the ideal thing to do, but we're talking a pre-school parking lot here. I can't see calling the police for something like that.
