I am in the market for a new car or newer used car.

Here are my requirements:
  • Clearly above-average fuel economy
  • Prefer 4-Doors, or a very comfortable 2-door
  • Distinctive exterior styling/very unique/nothing generic/anti-box styling
  • Sporty
  • Great handling
  • Great visibility (great for lane changing and ease of backing up)
  • American or Asian Car
  • Car to be used for medium commute
It does not have to have super Horsepower, nor does it have to come fully loaded, unless what is loaded in it is high quality and will be standard in the future.

Please give me your top 5 choices

Price limit = 40K, prefer under 30K

Does such a car exist?

Not sure if this matters, but I live in South Florida.

Buick Regal GS. Mid $30k range, 255 hp turbo 2.0 liter 4 cyl Ecotec, 6 speed manual. Great handling, comfortable, good economy and power.

Another option would be the Hyundai Sonata with the 2.0 turbo, as well, but I'm not sold on the styling or visibility.

The Buick Regal or even the Ford Fusion or the Chevy Malibu would all fit your bill

The redsigned 2011 Charger will hit showrooms soon. The standard V6 has 290HP and should be rated at 18/29mpg. Or get the 5.7 HEMI with 370HP, rated at 17/28. Should start at around $26K.

My other choice would be a Subaru Legacy. Get the GT (turbo) with 265hp if you want a stick and a quick car. If you want best MPG, get the 170HP 4cycl rated at 31 highway. If you want an automatic, get the 3.6R with 256hp which is rated the same as the GT with 18/25. The AWD would be nice in the FL rain.

Our last car, a 2006 Acura TL. It's a good looking, low maintenance 4-door with a huge trunk, very fast, gets 30-mpg, and has many safety and luxury features. The only problem with an Acura is expensive repairs, as with any other "higher-end" average car. My second choice would be the Chrysler Sebring.

Technically that's a European car.

I know you probably know that, but it didn't seem like the OP wanted one, so worth a mention.

GM and Ford are global, so even good Fords often have Euro roots.

Another one I like is the Taurus SEL. Test drove one a few months ago, and it was quite nice, especially for $30k all up:

I agree merc. That will be our next car (in AWD) if we are in the market soon. These cars are perfect sized to us

I know it's Euro, but how about the 335d. It bases at a tick under $45,000 but qualifies for various credits and BMW itself is currently giving $3,500 off on 2011's. You should be able to swing a base model out the door for $40k. You get 23 city, 36 highway all wrapped in a perfect package with performance that is only slightly behind the 335i.

Outside of that on the American side I would look at either the Ford Fusion, Chevy Malibu or Buick Regal. The Regal almost invalidates the Malibu especially if you are looking to get the Malibu in LTZ trim and stick with the 4 cylinder. The lowest Regal starts at that point and has the same standard stuff, but is a better overall car.

On the Asian side, you have to consider the Hyundai Sonata in standard or turbo form. Outside of that you're looking at the ubiquitous Honda Accord. Antoher Asian contender to me is the Acura TSX. I would normall also recommend an Infiniti G37 or Subaru, but neither of those fits your fuel economy requirement.

One more Euro if I may would be the VW CC, fantastic package and styling.

So, my list:

American:

Ford Fusion
Chevy Malibu
Buick Regal

Asian:

Hyundai Sonata
Honda Accord
Acura TSX

Euro:

BMW 335d (the only car that I think really checks all the boxes, but it does push the bank)
VW CC
