Ford rangers seem to go foreever and they sell pretty cheap. If you stick withthe basic two seater with no extra space they are really cheap.

Have no idea where you live but a quick look on AutoTrader showed many Impalas available at your price point.
Some of them were even at Chevy dealers.

Get an older sedan from a retiree who's given up driving Their should be tons of low mileage used cars like Buicks or Mercury's down there.

Well, get something you really like.........because at that price-range, even with a good pre-purchase inspection, thing cans and probably will happen.

That means yes, you will probably be dumping some good dollar$ into your ride.

I just bought a beater Ram-van with 220K miles on it. I really like it.....I won't be joyous when I have to throw some bucks into it, but I am willing to do so!

As many have said, put $1000 aside in case of major repair.

Look at a Scion xB ,tc, xa, it's a tayota with a different face! There are people who keep these cars, and customize , so it is resellable.

Corrola , Camry, good quality.

Honda Accord, Acura TL,good quality. 2 Dr accords are cheaper.

Your year range would be 02' and newer.

First expense after purchase is a complete fluid change, no flush , just drain and fill.
Full diy detail, it ain't hard.

For timing belt vehicles, the belt should be changed every 80 k miles. They last 75/100 miles.

I buy my cars around that price range
Last one I bought was 3 years ago, a 2005 ford focus hatchback

You have to buy from an owner, not a dealership
I try to find them around 80,000 miles
A lot of people like to get rid of their cars when the warranties expire
Pay a mechanic to check it for you
Keep in mind, that cars at this price range take a lot of work
First, you have to take care of many things that start going bad
I go ahead and change spark plugs, serpentine belt, etc, etc.

AVOID buying foreign cars

I'd give it the sniff test. You should be able to detect any mold or mildew or heavy smoking. Also, if it's very clean inside, it was probably taken care of. Of course you shoul check the vin # on that registry to see if it's been wrecked.
