April 2007 was my last big drive after 7 years with the little roadster, sold it when i got home due to practicality issues. But during that time we did the Dragon and related roads many times.
Did the Dragon
Charohala Skyway
Wayah Bald Rd
Rt 28 from the Crossroads of Time all the way to Franklin.
Blue ridge from Cherokee to Asheville.
I've heard about the Dragon, where exactly is it located?
Another great drive for sporty cars is in Virginia. Rt 501 from Buena Vista to Lynchburg 30 miles of switchbacks across the Blue Ridge/Appalachian mtns.
I've ran it a few times. THe entire area is amazing. The Dragon is intense if you speed. As of late there has been more police presence and the internet spread the word about the road so its congested sometimes. That said everyone should drive it at least once.
As another poster stated the roadways around it are amazing as well and breathtaking.
Thanks for the map but it is 318 miles from my house so I don't think I'll be running out there for any Sunday drives any time too soon.
It sure looks like lots of fun.

The Dragon is nice, but as Yogi Berra said, " so crowded no one goes there any more". There are a ton of great roads in the mountains and in the area, but the Tail of the Dragon is usually choked with slow-riding Harleys (speed limit is 30, these guys typically go 15-20 mph and never pull over to let you pass), psychotic sports bikers, tourists that completely cross the double yellow on blind corners, and the occasional semi that gets stuck on the road. Then there is the Tenn State Police who know the road well as a concentrated speed trap.
All that said, its a great road and draws lots of auto-aficionados so you can see some incredible cars and bikes. Lots of car groups go up there and its really cool to see six S2000s or 911s go racing buy, or some crazy rider pop a wheelie through a bend. Its also a dangerous road with no room for error or heroism, and I've never been up there and not seen an accident from a biker or motorist that couldn't make a turn.
Its great that you ran it in the rain - that is a very unique experience because that is usually when the road is deserted any more, and as you know, wet high-g turns are exhilarating, and the Dragon has plenty of opportunities.
