I remember them and I miss them.
I also miss having the little knob you could pull out to get actual, honest to gosh fresh air through the dash. Pop it open on the open highway. Close it during stop and go traffic so you wouldn't suck up too much exhaust.

Do any European cars retain vestiges of these pre-AC amenities?
The American auto industry now designs an Air Conditioner, and then builds a car around it.

My 68 GTO had power windows, but it had wind wings and they had a crank. While I never had problems with the A/C or the main power windows, I liked the idea that even if both failed, I could still manually crank the wind wing open (I grew up around Atlanta, so some sort of cooling was needed in summer)
My 65 GMC truck has wind wings, I need to get it back on the road...anybody got a "round tuit" that I can borrow?

I miss them too. They were great for those of us that smoke.
With cars now its probably more fuel efficient not to open the windows but I still like to have a little fresh air.

I've found that with today's cars you can open the front windows as far as needed, even all the way down, but to avoid most side drafts you also need to open the rears an inch or two - or more if you want. It creates a different airflow and it does help. But nothing seems to stop the biggest gusts - aside from rolling them back up.

I Miss Windwings
They probably raised the drag coefficient by 0.20

My '95 has them as well. They draw in a huge amount of air.

I miss them, as well as the better fresh airystems cars had then. Remember the side swing out door vents on the front fenders of 50s Studebakers, and early T-Birds?
I also remember dimmer switches on the floor, bumper jacks, three on the column standard transmissions, and something I DO NOT MISS at all is vacuum windshield wipers!
