About the size of the old Chevy Astro, but a couple feet longer, maybe a bit wider. Conventional, part-time 4WD with a locking differential. Good ground clearance. Cargo style: driver seat and front passenger seat and the rear ALL for cargo. 6cyl engine with choice of manual or automatic transmissions. A full box frame and suspension up for a payload of more than 1500 lbs. Easy to customize inside for lots of uses.
Sorry, the new mini-minivans are too small, underpowered, and lack the other features, although I like that they are being made, for those who want them. But there is no midsize van that isn't a passenger bus.
I don't understand why there is NO midsize cargo van made, let alone with the other features listed above.
I'm not sure the AWD Transit ever happened in Europe. Also not sure if I'd consider a conversion (Quigley does conversions for all the major vans) as 'comes with'.
I didn't realize the Sprinter came in 4x4. Would definitely consider one for van living. Diesel + 4x4. Dang those things are hot.
Yeah, many older minivans used to be really much more like a cargo-van, as opposed to a
car with wagon-like features. Like the Aerostar I used to own, what a great vehicle that could be used for a lot of things.
No, just an all-round vehicle that I can also camp in. The usual meaning of camping, not bum camping.
I carry bikes, kayaks, tow a trailer, yard stuff...truck duties. But it would be nice to add a midsize van option to the extremely short list of suitable vehicles. I like the midsize trucks but the beds are pretty short even with the "longbed".
I should have listed that a manual transmission would be my choice. This and the parttime 4WD (with 4-Low range)--not AWD or pseudo-AWD--pretty much rule out anything that is now available. And I did say midsize, not fullsize. So no Transits, NVs, or their little siblings. The big ones are too big and the little ones are too little.

I once rented the long version of an Aerostar. Didn't much like the vehicle overall but the size was very useful.
