I have never owed a diesel, but is there a special type of oil they take or can you run simple synthetic Mobil 1?
That all depends on the particular engine model. Most all motor oil sold in the US these days carries both a gasoline and diesel rating. Many diesels can use whatever oil carries a sufficient diesel rating on the oil. Some engines do require a synthetic like Mobil 1 or an equivalent. I've driven diesels designed to use common 15W-40 motor oil with a "CF" rating, and I've driven diesels that require synthethic oils only. Just depends.
I'm rolling with a modern MB diesel, the V6 bluetec mated with a 7 speed transmission in my E-Class. Turbo'd 3 liter. At moderate highway speeds, I'll get in excess of 37MPG (not great, but not a tiny car). I have mine chipped so it has about 230HP and 440-450 Ft/lbs of torque at 1600 (!) rpm. Acceleration from 20-80 is pretty stellar. off the line, I'm probably only a 6-6.5 second car (not too bad, beats a prius). Diesel is good. If they start selling a 535d in the states, that'll probably be my next car. I can't go smaller than a 5 or E.
I think the newer cars with diesels dont really have much a smell like the ones of yesteryears had.
Not when they are new, but after 50-100k miles, they certainly can. My buddy's VW TDi is testament to that, though it's not as smelly as our 6.5 turbo diesel dually.

As was mentioned, they have to be rated for diesel use. I'm using the 15W40 CF rated oil in my '94 Chevy 6.5 TD.
