Great, I'll check those out! (And yes, I did mean San Diego, not South Dakota, but that is totally my mistake in not spelling it out...) I know insurance is high in CA. Do you know what it would be (approximately) for something like a civic or corrola for someone with no points on their license?
I'm not sure specifically, but you will be paying a premium as I am assuming you have not had car insurance coverage for the past 12 years or so. For whatever reason, this bumps you into a seperate category and a surcharge is added. You can get around this if you are a member of a car sharing company like ZipCar. By being a member, you are automatically covered by their policy and they can provide you proof of coverage.
I wouldn't spend money on Hybrids just yet. Gas will come back down again and it would take you 10 years to make up the difference between the cost of a normal car vs the same model in hybrid forum.
Tiny cars. Fiesta, Cruz, Xa, Xb,. Small cars, Corolla, Sonata, Focus. Mid Size, Camry, fusion, accord. All of these are good cars that are easy to drive and get good gas mileage.
Lease rates are all over the board. I saw a deal for a Sonata 2.0 turbo for $199 a month just a few few weeks back. Someone had a small car for $129 a month but I can't remember who it was. A few yrs ago my GF leased a Hyundai four door for $99 a month with $999 down. Deals are out there.
If you need a good, versatile car, I would highly consider the aforementioned Civic. It's reliable, economical, and practical, though you would need to find an Si if you want more of the fun factor.
There are some parts of SD that are more like LA and OC, with respect to the car culture, but even in the car-obsessed areas to the north, there are many people who drive normal, reliable cars that get them where they need to go.

Call an insurance company, it would take them all of 5 minutes to give you a quote on multiple cars.
