My house is currently up For Sale. Once it's sold, I plan on moving 5 hrs south. It will be me and the 2 dogs. I downsized my belongings quite a bit. I'm moving more boxes than anything. The furniture I'm moving will be minimal. I plan on using a U-Haul for the move. The boxes I have are currently stacked on 6 shipping pallets, and the boxes are stacked to the ceiling (of my basement).

Here's the trick.... once the house is sold, I plan on paying cash for my new home, 5 hrs south. Financially it will be VERY TIGHT! I've really got to watch my pennies closely. I figure I will be "homeless" for at least 1 month.... hopefully not more than 2 months. (yes, I plan on making a fast buy of the next house)

I will place the pets in a Kennel for about 2 wks, while I'm at the new location, shopping for homes and making my offer. This Kennel will cost me $25/day. Then add the daily cost of a Motel during those 2 wks, while I'm shopping and making my offer. Then I plan on pulling my 2 dogs out of the Kennel, and the 3 of us will be camping for however long it takes. There is a campground 1 mile from my new location. It will only cost $20/day for all 3 of us camping. That's a savings right there. Plus they have a deal..... pay for 6 days and get the 7th day free.

What does any of this have to do with a car? All I keep thinking is.... a minivan would be much more practical. Practical for the move. Practical for getting the dogs moved on a 5 hr trip. Practical for camping. And once I get my new home, I'm going to have to start buying furniture and need a way to haul it. I'm thinking a mini-van would make much more sense.

My current vehicle is a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. Minor rust (I live on the IL/WI border with our winter salt roads). Guess what??? It ONLY HAS 52,000 MILES ON IT!!!!!!! (that's a story in itself)

My concern is..... I'm currently sitting on a pretty reliable vehicle with very little wear and tear. It was owned by my elderly Mother, so she drove it like a little old lady.

I'm afraid that I'll get rid of the Intrepid, buy a USED mini-van, and somehow it will end up "biting me in the butt".

Maybe I should just "play it safe" and keep my LOW MILAGE car?

I really am a dumb stupid woman when it comes to cars. I don't know what I should do????

You are the one that has to drive it and live with your choice.

Play it safe; You already have a complicated plan as it is. Add to it selling a car and buying another used car with potential problems and headaches-forget it. Also does not seem you would be able to do the repairs yourself/if needed, that is another big problem. I see a lot of stress in this plan-don't make it any worse.

For a 12 year old car that does now seem much. For a Dodge not so good.

Rough choice. No one can really help here more than your instinct.

This whole plan has so much potential for things going wrong i wouldnt compound the issue with a newer Minivan that could turn into a money pit of unexpected repairs.

I guess you're right. I best stick with my trusty dependable car. Ho-Hum.... Tomorrow at 5pm I have a person looking at my house. This isn't her 1st time. We think she is going to bid on the house. Now I'm starting to panic about the move. LOLOL

Thank you. Your advice is much appreciated.

I would agree with everyone else. Why complicate something like this, by adding in a car purchase. Make do with what you have and then feel things out once you are settled.

One piece of advice though, have you considered renting one of those "PODS" for your move? They drop the container off at your house, you fill it up and then they pick it up and can store it however long you need them to and then they will drop it off at the new house. I only suggest this because you want to use a U-Haul for the move, but don't have anywhere to move to. I'm guessing you'll be putting all of your stuff in storage as I doubt you'll keep a U-haul for a month or two while you settle on the house.

I never heard of a POD? Thanks. I'll look into that.

Here's a link to their site:

The Best Moving & Storage Idea Ever for Self Storage, Portable Moving and Storage Solutions | PODS

There are some other companies that do something similar, but I'm not familiar with them.
