WILMINGTON, Calif., May 17 (UPI) -- A computer mistake that led to a California gas station selling premium gas for $1.10 a gallon led to a huge rush of business, the unlucky owner says.

Within 4 hours Sunday, the Valero station in Wilmington was out of premium, The Torrence Daily Breeze reported. Kenny Nguyen, who owns the station, was out $21,000, based on his calculation that 7,000 gallons were sold at a price about $3 less than it should have been.

I would of filled up my 25 gal tank in a hearbeat at that price. Lucky people but not so lucky station owner.

I would have showed up with a truck load of empty 55 gallon drums.

Do you think that the people who bought gas at the lower price will go back and pay the difference? Somehow I don't think so!

Im surprised the station attendant did notice the long lines or think something is wrong here. No one told him or her what was going on & thats ashame for the station owner. Gas is too damn high anyways & a fair price per gal would be about 2 bucks & NOT 4 dollars +.

If you are the owner, don't leave this type of work to the person you pay minimum wage to! He deserves what he gets. No pity.

it never ceases to amaze me that people are refusing to do the right thing and let people know when there is a problem. yes i understand that gasoline prices are high, but to punish the station owner who makes about 9 cents per gallon when they get full price is just flat out wrong. put yourself in the station owners shoes, your profit margin is small to begin with, and now you just lost $21,000 in one day because there was a problem with the pumps.

Jesus, how does the attendant not realize what's up after he's made change for the tenth customer? I guess I could understand it if every one of the customers used a credit/debit card, but it's hard to imagine how the cash paying customers slipped by, unless the attendant just assumed everyone was only getting a couple of gallons for some odd reason...

Or, more than likely, it's a case of someone trusting a computer blindly, regardless of whether or not what its telling them makes any sense in reality.

I suspect the business owner can write this off as a loss.
