My car always looks horrible after being detailled. All the little nicks chips and dings stand out. Once it gets some grime built up and then I wash it, it looks like it could be new.
No, you didn't waste your time. The good cleaning and wax job is still there and doing its job. One thing I would advise is keeping one of those silicone water blades handy for this type of thing. Rain stops, head out and use the blade to get the water off the car. Letting the water dry on the paint is what leads to the grime look.
Sometimes in South Texas we have what I call mud rains, using a silicone water blade would result in the most beautiful scratches the world has ever seen
