behind the second row I mean? The cargo bottom would flip up, and you'd have another row of rearfacing seats. My dad's first station wagon was like that, so you could end up seating 7 or even 8 people (this was before seatbelts were really in vogue of course). Are there any manufacturers that still make wagons like this, or did until recently?
An Option on the volvo 740. Ford continued to make a staiton wagon with a thrid seat until somewhat recently I think. The Chevy traverse, Buick traverse equivalent, Dodge Durango, and several other cars are really just rounded off station wagons with extra clearance. THey all have a third row seat and I think that they all fold flat.
A few of the Volvo wagons had/have them, I think it was an option on both the XC70 and XC90. Audi used to offer it as an option on both the Allroad and A6 Avant, but I think they stopped offering it in 2002.
We had a '78 Buick station wagon which had at least one little bench seat which folded down from the side. The passengers faced outward.
It also had a little "hidden" cargo hold in the sidewall near the back door. One night, on the way home from the drive in, we heard muffled yells and a strange knocking sound. It turned out that big sister had locked little sister into it!
Volvo offered it on 145's, 240's and 740/760 models. My friend could not keep them in stock years ago in his Volvo garage. Not sure if they make them for modern Volvos.
In the Volvos, many of the older models had the option; and in recent years, the XC70 has had the rear facing seat, whereas the XC90 has front facing third row seats. However, the rear facing seats in Volvos and Mercedes have height/weight requirements that basically makes them useful for children. The front facing seats do not have the same limitations in the third row, which is why the SUVs tend to be more versatile.

I certainly remember jump seats. Heck, I can remember rumble seats!
