You're 19. Getting your dream car now will leave you feeling empty for the rest of your life.

Default I love this forum

Thanks EVERYONE who posted something! You guys really helped me think about my decision. I think my love from BMW started when i was 10 and my dad brought home a Black 323i sedan and told me when i graduated it would be mine . Now alot has happened in those 9 years and my dad has swicted cars countless times from a vovlo S40 to a Ford Hybrid Escape . I however am on my second car first one isnt even worth mentioning it broke down on me so many times ....now i am with my 2000 Toyota Camry which is reliable but lacks that "it" factor. I can see that $6,000 wont get you ANYWHERE in the BMW world. Which makes sense so i will wait until i graduate college with a Bachlors and then be riding in style....it will be a reward to myself, like i said before alot can change in 10 years somethings can change in 4

vmaxnc : Very funny, and your right if i get my dream car now i will feel empty later

Think of what you'll be dreaming of after you've had a couple cars more performance oriented than a Camry (yes, I know, it's hard to imagine that such a vehicle exists ) and can look forward to a time when you can afford even better.

yeah, wait on the car, they are a heck of a lot more enjoyable after you turn 25 and have a place of your own with a garage to keep it. College student and a nice car is a bit out of character, and you have plenty of time to look for the perfect dream car. Try a few out every yr to help solidify your choice. (My kid...(26) just went for an S40 AWD, (6spd?) and got it quite cheap, but not as cheap as the $400 GTI he has been driving since age 18. I am hoping to secure the $400 GTI, as it is very fast and fun (and pretty cheap to drive))... not as cheap as my StealthRabbit, 50 mpg since 1976, on free fryer grease

Great idea....i have always wanted a car that runs on fryer grease, all i would have to do is visit a local resturant and take the old grease off there hand, and where i live Northern VA there are ALOT of resturants. I also would save money on gas....can any car be turned into a "greaser" (meaning its source of fuel is old grease) i would glady trade in my car for a greaser then i could save money on gas and then save it for my new BMW one day, or i can be used for college books

If you do have your heart set on it, avoid the auction and buy from a BMW enthusiast. Head over to the BMW forums and see what people there are selling. Chances are you are going to find well taken care of examples. Since older Toyota's like yours are always in demand, I would suggest doing a private party sale to maximize your return.

It may suck, but the best advice is to keep what you have until you can afford to play.
What he said. College means you don't have the time or the money to keep up with a car like a BMW, this will be a frustrating experience for you.

Suggest you keep the Camry, lack of cool factor and all, concentrate on your studies, if you have a serious major, you will find work when you graduate, and then will have the money for a nicer car.

Hint - VA is rust country. If you want to have a nice car without dumping big bucks into continuous depreciation of late models, you need to move south, west, or both.

Not what you want to hear, I know, but this is the way it is.
