Do you want a dictionary term?

Obviously I'm not going to find a car that offers luxurious sleep. I want something that allows me to fold the rear seats down and lay a mat down or something, not where I have to curl up in the fetal position or just sleep in the front seat.

I want something that gets around 25 MPG. I know that's not good per say, but for this kind of car I don't expect anything better than that. The reason I ruled out some of the other cars was because they got less than 20 MPG, and that's not acceptable to me.

No...but do you consider 20mpg good fuel economy?25mpg?35mpg?That is what I meant....I think anything above 25 mpg highway is good enough.

Okay....well any decent sized wagon 'should' fit this criteria, although you might want to actually check out how flat the back is with the seats down, some aren't very flat at all.

We are looking at Subaru Outback wagons, mainly due to the interior room as well as the fuel economy and the AWD capability.

You can look here to get fuel economy.

I am 5'6 and can sleep at an angle in the back of my 93 Saturn wagon. I have to scoot the passenger seat all the way up and put a cooler or box in the gap for support. Very cheap tp buy and 36 mpg on the highway. The seats don't fold completely flat so I put a couple of pieces of rigid foam in the back to bring up the level. Add an air mattress and it is fairly comfy though not enough head room to sit up.

I was able to fit a twin mattress in a 74 Pinto wagon. No headroom to sit up though! It was comfortable. And I only paid $300 for the car (back in August 86). Worked in a pinch. And got good fuel mileage.

Jeep Cherokee with a very reliable vehicle, will not get you the mpg you want. The Pre 99 4.0 is a hell of a motor

My new motto is to not buy anything I can't get with cash. Right now I'm looking at an '86 Volvo 240 wagon 5 speed and it's just in my price range. Is $2100 a good price for that car? Everything looks pretty good except for a couple seats have rips in them.

Well you can't go by me, but a 86 Volvo "TO ME" is not worth $2100! My wife bought her 240 (84 model) in 1995 for $3200. Just got rid of it in '11. My most expensive used car has been $1200. My cheapest two have been free! Lest you think the free ones were parts cars, the 74 Impala was my Grandmothers and the 74 Montego has been in the family since new. In all honesty though, even though Volvos have great reputations, try to get it for $1500. And check the wiring. Some of the 80's (don't know which years) have the underhood wiring harness fall apart. By the time my wife got rid of hers, we had a switch to the fuel pump and a seperate push button switch for starting because of the failing wiring harness. Also the wipers!

My daughter got a 1992 Lincoln town car for $2500 (give or take a hundred or two, i cannot remember, it could have been $2,250). She gets 26 - 28 MPG on the freeway. It is super comfortable, very safe, and has been very reliable. They are cheap becuase everyone assumes they get bad gas mileage and will not look at them. Sure it is an old lady car, but is that a bad thing? Many old ladies take good care of their cars and do not drive much. Just do not get one that was used as a limo.

We just bought a 1998 Volvo TC V70 for another daughter. It cost $1500. It has a recently rebuilt engine and gearbox (transaxle, not transmission). It seems like a solid car. The computer says it gets 22.3 MPG average mixed city and freeway driving. As a station wagon, is should be reasonably comfortable to sleep in. Not as comfortable as the lincoln, but it is a really nice car.

I'd say $2100 is too much for a 86 240, unless it is an exceptional low mileage condition. It will do the job though, I've used one as a camper and slept 2 comfortably, even managed to cook in the thing. Yeah, I know it wasn't a smart idea but it was well below 0ºF outside, OK?

The 740 series will do the same job and be a bit newer. V70's are newer yet and are getting into that price range. I've seen occasional XC70's in that price range but that vintage of XC isn't a good bet.
