Thinking of retiring our 18 year old Saturn for a midsize car; DH has
been looking at Hyundai's, Sonata or possibly Elantra, maybe Ford, how
about a Toyota?
Preowned (used) it would definitely be, what year would you suggest? Most of the driving is done by a mature young lady---60 + ! LOL.
Oh! We would also get an all wheel drive as well 4 wheel disc brakes as
we live in the mountains and do get some snow. 30+ miles per gallon we would also like to get for gas mileage.
Sonata/Elantra do not come with AWD, Fusion only comes with AWD with the V6 so it won't get anywhere near 30 mpg. The Subaru Legacy and Suzuki Kizashi sound like your best bet. Toyota has the Matrix available in AWD but that isn't really midsize nor does it get even decent mileage for what it is.

consider the autos you mentioned. What about a Honda CRV or any good all wheel drive?
The Honda CRV is a good vehicle, and has an automatic 4WD system, not AWD. Another consideration in the same category would be the Subaru Forester, which is a very snow-capable AWD, in addition to the already mentioned RAV4. If you want a bit more luxury and power compared to a CRV, you could also consider the Acura RDX.

Both the Rav4 and CRV are solid choices, I'd lean towards the Rav4. The Rav4 gives up a bit of mileage in 4 cylinder trim and the interior on the Rav4, like most Toyotas, lives rather a lot to be desired. With the 4 cylinder (coupled with an old 4-speed auto) it's a dog. Handles pretty well, but it's slow. The V6 is a better engine coupled with a better transmission. It actually gets comparable to slighly better mileage than the V6 AWD sedans and you pick up some cargo room and the optional third row seats. They're actually usable in a pinch even for adults so long as the front two rows scoot up. Personally, I feel you give up too much with the way the CRV drives to get too excited about it. The Rav4 is close to car-like driving, the CRV is not.
Most of these suggestions are small SUVs. Remember - every Subaru is AWD. So you could look at the Impreza, which is a compact sedan/hatchback or you can consider the Legacy, which is a mid-size. Most Legacy models have a 4 cylinder engine and 2012 models have 31 MPG highway EPA number.

I'd personally recommend the Impreza or Legacy as well. Pretty good MPG and a great AWD system. Given what the OP states is their normal driving conditions in the mountains, the Subaru will feel right at home.
