And the damn thing will probably cost 28 grand by the time they figure out how to get it EPA-compliant.

You can tailor the Jetta to suit your style and needs with either the SE or SEL trim levels and add convenience, sunroof, and a sport package. The top of the line SEL with Sport Package will retail for $22,995. That’s the same price as the clean diesel TDI model ...... ($22,995 for The Peoples Car... tdi.) Ahhh those Mexican unions.

As long as VW diesel sales remain strong, this will most likely happen. Through the first 6 months of the year ~28% of VW sales were diesel models, that is the strongest sales performance ever for diesel cars. The rumors are being reported as being a little stronger than a regular rumor with anticipated sales to begin in 2013 as a 2014 model. I've also heard that GM has already begun the certification process for the 2.0 turbo diesel, which is a pretty expensive thing to do if you don't plan on using the engine here.

Some sources are pegging the price at about a $2k premium over the Cruze Eco, so pricing for the diesel would probably start in the $19k-$21k range, which would be extremely competitive to VW's TDI's and return better MPG.

The best part is, if GM does it and is succesful, it may just open the floodgates for others and hopefully see the Volt move to a diesel as well.

It would be poetic if GM brings back a good diesel to repair the damage they did back in the late 70s with those stupid 350 conversions. I'd like to see more diesels offered across the board. The original flex-fuel engine.

Now if they would only bring over the Cruze hatchback...

Why don't VW produce the Golf TDI here?
About time the US car manufacturers started to make more diesel models if they won't let more European cars into the US.
In 2010 in the UK diesel care sales overtook petrol models for the first time taking 51% of the market.
