Clicking coming from under hood on left side 95 Chevy Cavalier (CV joint, engine)

Clicking coming from under the hood on the left side of a 95 Chevy Cavalier (close to the front) with 89,000 miles.
It is not a ticking sound, it is a clicking sound. A mechanic looked at it briefly and said it was coming from the engine.
I'm wondering if it could be anything else because last summer a mechanic told me that the engine sounds very good.
Anybody have any ideas?

Is it a steady, rhythmic noise or is it intermittent? If it's steady, does it get faster as the engine revs higher? If it gets faster with the engine revs, than it's likely to be engine-related. If it gets faster but only when the car is moving faster (regardless of engine revs), it likely has to do with something else in the drivetrain (CV axles, maybe?).

When was the last time you changed the oil? Another question- is the coolant full? Oil breakdown can cause engine noise and so can overheating.

I'd agree. If you notice it particularly when you turn then it's your CV joints. If it sounds serious, rather than fix it I'd try to come with a little more scratch for a newer used car and just drive the '95 into the ground.
