There was story on The NBC Nightly News about Ford reopening the plant in Louisville. The announcer stated that the plant was originally built in 1955 to build Edsels.
I agree with CALGUY. You don't build and equip a factory in a couple of weeks, nor do you design a new car and start building it the next day. Research & development on the Edsel started in 1955, so it's likely that the new facility was started at the same time.
And for the record, Edsel Division of Ford Motor Company was created in 1956, and the 1958 Edsel debuted in September 1957.
It could be that I came from the 1950"s generation.
Back then, ALL cars had style, and each one was world's apart from the other in style.
I think this Citation was the best when it comes to style.
Everyone likes something different, and ONE thing that could be said of the Edsel is, it was different.
Bob..

The front end was what killed the Edsel... I honestly think that if they had redesigned it the car may have lasted.

the styling was not what killed the edsel, it was the lack of reliability that killed it. if it was styling alone, then the later edsels, starting in 1960, would have been hot sellers, and they were not.
