Might be getting my first car. What's a good 'starter' one as it were? Max I wanna spend is 3-4K. I've found some Crown Vic Police Interceptors that look pretty great. At what mileage should one start avoiding a car?
Which models? A buddy of mine has a 2001 LS2. It's pretty nice and he hasn't had many issues with it. I could only find two LS2s near me though, and one was pretty expensive and the other is described as a 'fixer-upper' :/
Ah, the feeling of buying a first car. When I say I've owned alot of cars, I mean it. I had a 2000 Crown Vic P71. It was fun for the first month then after that the repair bills got old, fast! Ex-Police cars are nothing but beat up cruisers. They get driven hard constantly. I would avoid a Crown Vic all-together. Believe me you don't want to be That Guy. lol Get something reliable and in good condition. Something you can take pride in owning. You have a pretty good budget for a first time buyer which allows you to be a bit more picky. I will be honest, I've had great luck with Honda Accords, Toyota Camry, Nissan Maximas. I had two Accords, two Maximas, one Camry. I had the V6 in the Camry and the Maximas and the 2.2 in the Accords. The Maxima to me was an upscale Camry with a bit more pep and performance. You could find a nice well taken care of late 90's Camry that some little old lady drove to church in your price range. Good luck in your search....
One car to stay away from is the 3.4 V6 engines from GM. I had a Monte Carlo Z34, nothing but PROBLEMS.

I hate when people drive white crown vics. Everyone will think you are a cop. You will notice traffic slowing down around you.

Thanks for the suggestions! What about Fords, any decent ones from those eras or should I stick with Japanese reliability?

Haha... no need to worry about that. I think white cars (without police/other livery) are ugly as sin.

all are cheap to purchase and any shop can find parts for it and any independant mechanic can work on them.
plus the PU can take the first few bumps and dings and it will still have re-sale value to contractors as a decent work truck
Appreciate the model year suggestions. How's the F-150 for fuel consumption? I'm sure it's no Prius but is it worse than Ford SUVs (family used to have an '04 Expedition... super comfy but damn it burned through fuel).

Civic, Corolla, Camry, Accord. All a few years old of course. I wouldn't even look at a used american car.
Stay away from a Crown Vic Police model. The cops beat them to ****.
I've had a couple Cavaliers that were bullet proof. There are two 95 Tauruses sitting out front right now, one with 250K, the other with 100K on the odometers. Also an 02 Taurus with 160K on it.
I'd also tell you to stay away from anything Chrysler.
