How much money do you spend per month on your car or cars? I recently sold my car and for the first time in a long time I am without a car. So it got me thinking about how much money I or the average person would save by not having a car.
How much does taxi fares, bus passes, train passes and other modes of transportation cost? Does the lack of car limit your income potential?
When you think about are you really saving anything? Without a car and pickup, I might as well bid the mob gooday. I have a 40 mile commute round trip for my job. And I am out in the sticks, so I can't walk to the market to get what I need.
With a car you can run your own schedule and not depend on other modes for your transportation. So for many the expense is worth it and needed.
I in all honesty think people don't save, unless you are in an area with a good public transportation system and or your parking fees are obnoxious. My aunt and Uncle lived in NYC for many years and didn't own a car. In their case it wasn't worth the expense of parking... They moved to Austin Texas and have a convertible.
If your life is set up so you don't need to drive to work or daily activities obviously you need to subtract the cost of train and bus rides, bicycle repairs, shoe leather and car rentals. But you can frequently come up with hundreds a month.
I would only save on insurance and gas as a monthly cost but then I wouldn't be able to get to work since there is no public transportation where I live.
