I like this. The transmission is on its way out and a 9-hour trip is planned for it.

Is it insanity or masochism ?

One scenario is that it won't shift into a high gear, runs at extremely high RPM's, and catches on fire.

We haven't heard from the Op since yesterday morning, so I suggest everyone keep an eye out for him parked on the freeway....!!

When my transmission goes out I usually wind up having to pay off his bar tab and bail him out of jail.

OP back again.
Vehicle - Dodge Caravan, nearly 99,000 mi.
Symptom: Weird jingling noise getting louder and louder over course of a month.
Local small town mechanic: Changed transmission fluid (doesn't that mean it was a problem with the transmission?) Said bring back in a week for further testing.
Friends and Neighbors: Your transmission is going out.
Need to drive: end of one job in one location, beginning of another job in another location.
No slipping or revving at the moment!
Thanks for all the info - maybe it isn't the transmission at all?
Will get the heavy duty AAA membership!
PS - I won't hit the road for 3 weeks. And it's I35, CA, so don't worry!

FWIW I have never heard of a transmission making a jingling noise. Does the noise vary in frequency or loudness with engine speed, road speed, or what?

What year Caravan? Which engine? (I am thinking some years, a bigger engine gets a different transmission, but not certain on that)

Changing transmission fluid is a mostly ignored maintenance task, the fact that your mechanic did it doesn't necessarily indicate that there is a problem.

What year is the Caravan? Up to the mid-1990s Chrysler transmission had some problems, I believe later models have had those issues worked out.

A "weird jingling" sounds more like something is loose than a transmission problem. I'd be more concerned about slipping, revving, or a clunking noise.

Travel safe!

Changing the transmission fluid is something you're supposed to do like changing the motor oil but not nearly as much. Did your mechanic also change the filter?

Does this noise happen when in park with engine running?

Does this noise become louder when making a turn at low speeds?

When you say it's not slipping or revving, is the rpms steady throughout the rpm range in all gears?

Is it worse when the car isn't warmed up?

All I know is our 2007 Altima had the transmission go out on us while we were on a trip. It started to make a whistling noise and was not at full power. We were 60 miles from our destination, and continued to drive it without incident. We drove it to several places for estimates too.
