A friend is looking to buy a sedan under $20k and I told him to look at the Chevy Cruz - Ford Focus and the Hyundai Elantra. What are his other choices?
Thanks

Some of the Ford Fiesta sedans are also under 20k, and they average around 40MPG highway. The Mazda 2, and Honda Fit are also 15K-20k. The also average 35-40MPG highway.

I just heard a radio spot advertising a new 2011 Honda Accord for $16,995.00 and a Civic for $13,995.00, which seem like great prices to me.

Don't forget the Nissan Versa sedan and the Nissan Sentra, Mazda 3, Kia Forte, and Toyota Corolla - all of which were recommended by Consumer Reports.

Consider a used car? 20k can get you a lot if you don't mind it being a little older. Hell I paid $7800 for my 95 m3 with just a hair over 100k in perfect condition.

I am a big fan of the Cruze myself. Seems to be very nice!

I am sure plenty will say a Civic would be better, or a Corolla. Both are great cars, and their parent company has a better reputation for reliability.

However, what is best for the person you are making suggestions to depends on lot on what they value. What are their size requirements for instance? Would a smaller car be ok? Do they need a bigger sedan? Is security of a long warranty a big factor?

Is he sold on new only? If I had to have a sedan, it would be a Pontiac G-8.

How big of a car does he need? You can get several midsize options at that price point like the Fusion, Malibu or Sonata, but they are going to be absolute base models. You can also get a midlevel smaller car like a Focus or Cruze, or you could get a pretty tricked out small car like a Fiesta, Sonic, Fit, etc. There really are a lot of options and it all comes down to need and how you measure "best".

If AWD is a nice to have... Subaru Impreza is under 20k, I think they are around the 17-18k mark. Subies are well regarded by Consumer Reports.
