Do not buy that car, what if it goes over 200,000 miles and it dies? You are going to have to buy another car, go find a car that is less than 150,000 miles

This argument is dumb... they also don't make 1996 Camrys anymore. Or 2000 honda Civics. Most modern model cars have 0 in common with a 10 year old version other then the name.

Does that mean you can't get parts for them? There are aftermarket companies that will have parts. Especially being GM which is a parts bin company(one part on 8 different models of cars)

All honesty, saturns are pretty good for older high mileage cars. That being said I would keep looking for stuff with less then 160k. Anything more and I don't care who built it, gonna have issues.

Saturns are relatives simple to work, on, pretty reliable and parts are cheap.

Just some vehicles I would consider.

These are great(4.0L inline 6), but unfortuneately the price reflects it. I'd try to offer $3500 on it
2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport (http://tulsa.craigslist.org/cto/2613186142.html - broken link)

looks rough but decent mileage
$1400 94 Ford Ranger extended cab (http://tulsa.craigslist.org/cto/2648132050.html - broken link)

1991 BMW 325i 2 door Excellent (http://tulsa.craigslist.org/cto/2617807627.html - broken link)

Find out mileage, if like 115k, I'd offer like $2k, i see more then one ad for it.
Mustang (http://tulsa.craigslist.org/cto/2647984885.html - broken link)

Offer, $1800, it will have issues though, but drivetrain will be near bulletproof with a 5.0, and 5-speed.

Unless your Toyota won't cast a shadow due to rust just replace the engine.

So what do you do when the engine that may have been sitting for 3 years in a junkyard has issues on first start up?

Replace the engine, especially if the alternative is shopping around for $2000 Saturns with high mileage...

what problems do you have with saturns? They have successfully become decent cheap high mileage cars.

I have a great auto repair shop that I trust, who found a replacement engine with 95K miles on it. The total cost with parts and labor, tax etc will be about $1800. I know Toyota's can last a very long time, but I Blue Booked my car and it came in about $2000 in value, so the repairs cost almost as much as the car's value. I had figured this would happen, but now I'm not sure what to do-Go ahead and repair it, or get a new pre-owned car. I'd like to keep it at $4000 or less for my next purchase, but was wondering if I should just replace the engine and spend $1800-2000 or spend the 4k or so on a new one. My current car is in fair shape-all the years of WI winters and now Tulsa's roads have taken it's toll. It may need new brake pads within a yr or so, otherwise up until now, it ran very well.
what would you all do???
You never did post up what's wrong with the existing engine - it may be repairable for all we know.

You didn't ever provide any details on the boneyard engine you are thinking about putting in.

Something to think about would be to get a Jasper or similar "crate" engine and put that in, while the engine itself would cost more, it would come with a warrenty, and the labor to install it is the same as the boneyard one. Of course most boneyard engines come with a 30 day warrenty, but if it turns out to be a dog, what you get is another boneyard engine, the labor to change it out again is up to you. Boneyard engines are a better deal for a guy who can do the swap himself over a weekend, and who would not be all that put out if he had to do the job over again at least once. That said this is not a car that gets a lot of "Ricky Racer" attention, so a boneyard motor from a wrecked car is likely to be fine.

Finally you never posted up any real information on what condition the rest of the car is in. The state of wear of the brake pads is not important in evaluating the rest of the car.

Blue book for a car this old is worse than worthless. The difference between the best and worst car with your year and approximate mileage is stark.
