The VSC and VSC Off lights remain illuminated in my 2002 Toyota Avalon with 40k miles after I start the car and do not go off. The check engine light is NOT illuminated and no codes are present when confirming with a code reader. Any ideas on what could cause both VSC lights to display? Could a rabbit or rodent have chewed a wire causing the lights to illuminate? The gas cap is on tightly and I pressed the VSC on/off button below the steering wheel and it doesn't affect the light.

Best case is that its been crittered. Could be a bad ABS sensor. Worst case scenerio is that the ECU has gone bad. I'd probably disconnect the car battery for an hour and see if it resets it. Car may be sluggish after this since it will need to re-learn its programming.

I disconnected the battery and the VSC and VSC off lights still illuminate. Do you think an independent repair facility would be able to diagnose the problem? It seems like if there is no check engine light, it might be difficult.

When it comes to specific systems other than the ECM system. I would recommend taking it to the dealer. Certain systems are allowed under law to be proprietary. That means a general repair shop does not have to be granted the ability to be able to scan those specific systems for Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

Under federal law any repair facility has to have the ability to scan for ENGINE DTC's. That is when OBD 2 came out under one standard DLC (Data Link Connector). All vehicles sold in the US regardless of make or model after 1996 have the same exact scan tool attachment. All aftermarket scanners have the ability to read, at minimum, the engine trouble codes.

For specific systems I would go to the dealer.
