So, by the numbers, not much. The FX has a two inch longer wheelbase, and more front seat legroom. The Murano has a taller body and more cargo and rear seat room. The FX35 is more powerful, and the automatic transmission has 7 gears, but the Murano has a CVT and can get better fuel economy.
There's a pretty large spread in cost and available features. But by the numbers, they're essentially similar machines from the same manufacturer, and I would expect that buyers do a lot of cross-shopping between an FX35 and a fully loaded Murano LE.
I didn't mind the Maximas in the 1990's, but now it seems like they have been replaced by the Altimas. Now, the maximas are supposed to be more "luxury", but I just don't see it. At the amount they are priced now there are better overall cars that are a lot better looking. I personally don't really car for the look of any Nissans these days. It is like they tried to make them stylish, but it didn't quite work. Although, I think most of the Japanese cars these days are pretty dull looking. Infiniti made the look work a little better than Nissan did. I also don't like how if you want a sunroof in some Nissans, you have to buy the whole entertainment package for about $3,000.
It appears to me that Infiniti hold their values slightly better than Nissan. The Altima has become a very popular car and you see them a lot. I think they have really taken the place of the Maxima, and I just don't see a lot of Maximas around anymore. The G37 in my opinion has a nicer interior and also has a sporty look and feel to it.
You mean the roof line. Yes it does look weird, and although I haven't spent any time with one, it can't be practical, or it would have been in use years ago.

I had a 1989 Maxima SE and 1991 Maxima SE. Two of the best cars I EVER owned. Ran like sewing machines, comfortable in long distance trips and exceptional power and fuel economy. I miss my Maximas.
Those were the best looking ones IMO, very modern and refined for their time.
The problem nowadays is that the Altima has gotten bigger and more powerful, so it has pretty much replaced the Maxima. I'm not sure why Nissan wants two models that compete with one another.
It's the year 2018, and I just recently purchased a 2010 Maxima SV fully loaded with every package. I love this car, the only car I actually like ever since my 97 Celica got totaled. I test drove a G35, and it was a nice car but I like the Maxima better.
Not much. Same chassis. Even the 4 door sedan is pretty much identical to a same-year 350Z or 370Z. Suspension parts are interchangeable, drivetrain parts will swap (other than the AWD drivetrain) and for the most part the G37 just has a few more luxury features and extra insulation to quiet the cabin.
Last Maxima I owned and loved was a 1995, after that they went downhill.
I also had a 2008 G35X (better response than terrible Maxima of same year) which was ok, but not in same class as a BMW 3 class for handling. Traded it for a 335 and never looked back of ever buying a Nissan again.
Nissan used to be my go to brand (had: 2 Maxima, Quest, Infinity).
However since Renault has taken control of the Nissan, what was once best engineered Japanese cars, have been failing in quality and performance every year for past 20 or so years.
Had a '91, a '96' a '02, and a '06. All were great cars, but my least favorite was the '06. It had a TERRIBLE turn radius, and some parts of it just felt cheap.
I drove a 2012 (rental) and absolutely LOVED it. I plan to own a Maxima again in the near future.
