This is my car, but different color. It doesn't look that cheap to me, especially with those rims. If you take away the merc logo, unfamiliar people might think it's a benz or something.
It is all for some fun. My thought is that you find a car that you like and join a club around that car or type of car. Can be a lot of fun. It is a hobby, lifestyle, and could be a way to make some money. I doubt in the sale of the car but in helping others that want the same mods as you have, that is if you completed the mods yourself. Not to say that you can't make some dough selling what you have built. Still doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of building something that you like and want to drive? An example of keeping what you have: I have a good friend that I have known most of my life. He drives the same car that he bought when he was in high school. Back in the early 80's he picked up a convertable VW Beetle from the 60's and has been driving it ever since. That car is a show car today. The guy has other cars but will never part with the bug.
I have had several cars myself and wish I would have kept them, but went on to the next project. Had fun with them but never made a profit on any of them. Now my boys want to take our 2000 Hyundai Accent and lower it, put a body kit on it, and clean that thing up. Should be a fun project.
Aftermarket vinyl has gotten so much better lately, I wouldn't just totally rule it out until you see it. Just ask the car dealers in your area where they go for aftermarket leather or interior repair.
While I would never mistake your car for a Mercedes no matter what you did to it, I totally don't think you should worry about what negative comments people will have about you wanting to modify your car. This forum is open to everyone. The average person thinks window tint and a license plate frame is modification. Just do it for you.
I would also not overlook the insurance cost of the car you have, as I am sure the Montego will be less expensive to insure than an Acura TL, Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, etc. that you may find for around $20k. Why not keep a car that you like nice, and extend its usefulness to you with some modification? You would likely pay more than your mods in increased insurance on another car, even purchased used, because of NJ's insurance rates, especially more urban areas that are in the NYC Metro area. You will have a unique car, but showy on the interior, and in the materials, not on the exterior where it may be more attractive to theft or vandalism.

Bmw, That's some good points. I have to think about all this. My insurance rate is pretty low now though, but yea it will increase with a more expensive car. Vandalism and theft can def be a problem around here.
This is kinda off topic, but what you guys think about Cadillac DTS? I was just reading about it, and it showed the greatest dependability ratings on JD Power survey to my surprise. It even beat lexus ls series, benz s class, and everything else, as a number one premium large car. I am sure they are cozy and beautiful, but are they really reliable?

I love the DTS, drives well, everything led, fully loaded. Negative is the Chevylike looking dash.

Defeat the purpose? THat woudo be like a painter painting one painting and saying, That's good enough I'll stop painting now. Or a musician only ever writing one song.

You kind of answered your own question. On to the next project. I personally have vastly more ideas for projects in my head than I can ever build myself, and I can't own everything I like all at one time, so I build/own them sequentially. The trick IS to make money on the projects so that you can do the next one without eating into normal day to day funds.
This is kinda off topic again, but:
I got a sub box with two 12' Kickers. It's pretty big and even though my trunk has 21' cubic ft of space, I have to take it out every time when I move big bags or suitcases so it gets annoying after a while cuz it's real heavy. Is there a way to put these subs into place without a box or any other way to solve this?
