I either drive my cars into the ground, or they get totaled. The best value for the money was probably my 1987 VW Golf -- I put 180,000 hard miles on that car in seven years, and it was relatively trouble-free; I didn't need any brake work on it at all until 120,000 miles.
Don't you guys know that on the CD Automotive forum not only does everybody make money on their cars but they get parts for free and do their own maintenance? I should also mention they don't for fuel either, they use waste vegetable oil that they get for free. They say there's a sucker born every moment but that isn't true of the people here.
And the majority can mask their sarcasm well, the rare who can't are obtuse.
My best I would have to say was my 2008 FJ Trail.
Bought new as a demo and owned it for about 2 yrs.
Sold it privately for $1500 less than I bought it for.
The 4-runner I bought after that paid me back big time as well but in a different way. I was hit head on by a drunk in an SL55. I was traveling at about 40 but have no clue have fast he was going. I walked away with minor injuries. He didn't.
my 1992 Toyota tercel--it was still going strong when i donated it and then i was informed that the donation svce sold it for $530. it had new brake system, new exhaust system and cat converter, new battery, back seat was like new, perfect car to make deliveries in
'92 Saturn Coupe. Purchased new with 4 miles on it. Sold it to my sister when it was 17 years old with 106k miles on it. Very reliable, only minor maintenance expense. Handled very well around corners and in snow.

My best so far is a car that has a reputation for being a total lemon--I have a 1996 Mercury Mystique with about 180k miles on it. Had to get a junkyard transmission put in at about 160K and some of the bells and whistles stopped working years ago, but it's still going strong.
Without a doubt it's the 98 Frontier I got in 2000 - bought it off a dealer's lot with 3K miles on it for $6500. No one ever knew why a perfectly good little truck was sitting there. I drove it for 10 years and ~110K miles, without a glitch other than the factory trans going out under warranty when the truck had <30K miles on it.
It was a fluke, other than a battery and tires every 5 years. I wish I had never traded it in a couple of years ago.
