I know what the codes are because I obtained them with a code scanner I own. There are many things that could cause a less than 1mm leak in the evap emissions system, all the way from a gas cap (mine looks great) to a leaky fuel tank and many things in between.
Sure...that's why a smoke machine costing an hour of diagnostic time will solve that much for you.
If that's too much for you, no offense, but try a bicycle.
P0442 EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM LEAK DETECTED (SMALL LEAK)
There is a hole of more than 1.0 mm (0.04 in) dia. in evaporation system or fuel tank.
P0456 EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM LEAK DETECTED (VERY SMALL LEAK)
There is a hole of more than 0.5 mm (0.020 in) dia. in evaporation system or fuel tank.
The (2) most overlooked items are: Make sure that there are no cracks on the fuel pipes and fuel hoses and
make sure the fuel pipe and fuel hose connections are tightened firmly.
The code that is generated by the code reader is way too vague. What you need to do is see if you can find a FSM for your vehicle, and to do that you should really belong to a Subaru board and ask this question there. Subaru owners would know common causes for these codes beyond what the code scanner reads which is usually something like "EVAP Large Leak" or something like that.
For example, I got a code P0455 on my Infiniti, which was EVAP large leak. Did the basic gas cap fix, and that wasn't it. It ended up being the EVAP canister purge valve, which was a $40 part and 10 mins to replace under the rear bumper. I learned this by reading the FSM which directed me to check this part out and confirm it was faulty.
