We have been discussing the GM X-cars (1980-1985), but these GM A-cars in this thread were slightly larger cars than the X-cars. These cars came out in 1982 and were much better cars mechanically than the X-cars and this style lasted all the way until 1996 (in Oldsmobile and Buick versions). The Chevrolet versions last year was in 1990 to make way for the new Lumina that year. All of these cars for certain years were also available as 2dr coupes and station wagons in 2 and 3 seat versions. Shown are a few wagon versions of each as well. Also they had sporty versions available, such as the Celebrity Eurosport, 6000 STE, Cutlass Ciera ES, and Century T-type.

My parents bought two Olds 98s in the mid-late 80s. (basically an uspcale version of the 88 and slightly different design cues.) They thought those were the greatest cars they'd ever driven. Then a few years later they got an Infiniti Q45. It was then they realized how woeful those Oldsmobiles were. At first my mom was horrified when she learned her car was actually Japanese. But apparently she got over it; they haven't owned an American car since.

Oh, those Oldsmobiles were good cars I think... and like riding on a puffy cloud. I had a great uncle that only bought Oldsmobile Ninety-Eights ever since the 1960s... he would buy a brand new one every 3-5 years. He kept his last three ones he purchased and before he died in 2006, he still had his 1976 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight, 1982 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight and 1985 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight. The last one he bought was like the one in the below photo... is that the one like your parents had? His wife - my grandmothers sister always seemed to like the 1976 model the best. She passed away in 2003 and had not driven in years either. All three cars are still setting on the property as far as I know where they have been untouched since about 2002. None of the kids can settle on what to do with the land or house, so all is just setting. If my memory serves me right, he also bought a new Buick Electra in 1985 (for my great aunt), which was alot like the Ninety-Eight- both became downsized FWD models that year.
Those Infinitis (by Nissan) were nice cars and the V8 was a good idea for Nissan, but I heard that the early Q45s have common engine issues and not near as good of an engine as Nissans 3.0L V6? The Q45 was designed to compete with the Lexus LS400 by Toyota. Good engines in those... I have one with 220K - still purrs like a kitten.
Here is the '85 Olds 98- my uncles was identical to this one. Was your folks car like this one?

I've always been partial to the Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera's and my mother currently owns a 1991 Olds Cutlass Ciera and it's been a really good car for her, I also heard the A body cars were roomier than the G body cars although the A body cars on the outside were smaller.
Did Pontiac stop making the 6000 after the 1991 model year?

Thats true... it came out the same year. I am not aware how widespread the problem was or even what it was, but I have seen a few gen 1 Q45s listed for same with engine problems.
AFAIK, the engines in those Oldsmobiles and Buicks were good cars, but these cars really did not compete with the Q45. Like you said, the Q45 competed with the BMW 7-Series and Mercedes S-Class.

Yeah, 1991 was the last year for the Pontiac 6000. 1990 was the last year for the Celebrity and it was only sold as a wagon in 1990. 1989 was the last year for the sedan, but the Cutlass Ciera and Century held on until 1996 in wagon and sedan form. I still see tons of these cars on the road, normally driven by older ladies.
Yeah, while these are popular 80s and 90s cars, I like all of these cars and like the higher end models, like the Cutlass Ciera Brougham, Century Limited and Celebrity CL. I was never too wild about Pontiacs version though. I did pass three of these cars today in 1980s form just on my drive from work... all were about 84-86 models... a Cutlass Ciera, Celebrity and a 6000. Several I see parked in driveways that I pass by daily. Also, today (and often) I see a 1985 Cutlass Ciera Cruiser wagon (like the one in the photo) in the parking lot at work almost daily. My aunts grandmother-in-law had a 1989 Cutlass Ciera that she had bought new. She kept it in the garage and it had 60K and was like new. She died in 2001 and my aunts husband (soon to be ex) inherited the car. He left it setting out in their driveway, never drove it (not his style I guess) and in 2002 we had a major hail storm in May of 2002 and the car was battered. I think he finally gave the car to his sister. I have not seen it in a long time... she may not even have it anymore.
My grandmother had a 1984 Celebrity sedan in the 1990s. It was the base model, basically with only A/C, tilt wheel and FM radio. It had the base 2.5L engine, but it was fuel injected, so it was peppy and it was a good car despite the naysayers of 80s American cars.
Drove a 6000 quite a bit in '86, it was "different" for its day, not too bad. All the other '85 models mentioned above........bunch 'em with the pre 87 K cars. Horrid, lots of idle and performance problems. Not American mfg. golden years that is for sure.

Lol, you people should take a trip to the junkyards in California (U pick it) as they are FULL of cars like these!!! Anyhow, its like going to a grave yard but only for cars and you walk around wondering "if only the cars could talk" as many people were conceived in cars, drive by killings out of cars, just married and driving away in these cars, all the way to cross country road trips when Ronald Regan was alive...lol
