I'd have a 1969 Chevrolet Z28 Camaro and a 1969 VW Beetle.
I inherited my mom's 69 VW Beetle and honestly I could not kill this car. I drove it all over the country, never even changed the oil I think (I was 17), and it never let me down. Best car ever for dependability. I also had a '67 VW bug and it too was awesome. Ran out of gas once in a 61 bug and out two cans of dry gas in the tank and the dang thing got to a gas station.
Think of if you could have any car from the year you turned 18 and in mint condition, which one or ones would you have? I'd have a Chevrolet Sprint as a fuel saving daily driver and a Buick Regal GNX for fun or cruising.
I turned 18 in 1980...probably the bottom of the barrel for vehicle selection and performance. Just because they were among the last of their kind, I'd probably go for a Trans-Am with the 6.6 liter. IIRC you could get the "real" 400 Pontiac or the 403 Olds motor, gotta have the Chief.
1987 Monte Carlo SS. Not a true muscle car like the 60's, but a hot piece of machinery for the late 80's that handled better than an average mid-size car.
I'm no fun...I wanted a '96 Camry, and I still remember exactly how I wanted it equipped: LE sedan, Plum exterior (though beige would be fine), Oak interior (came from the factory with bronze glass), and without the tacky gold-plated emblems most of them got as a dealer-installed option. I also wanted the coffee can exhaust with the five inch tip... Oh, and aftermarket wheels, (I think) TSW Imolas or how about some Fittipaldi Monolithic five stars...
The other one I wanted was a '96 Cutlass Cruiser...cheap space in a traditionally styled car. Last year of production. Woodgrain or no woodgrain, I didn't care. I also liked the Corsica and the Beretta in Raspberry Metallic. I'm probably the only person who ever liked that color. We had a S-10 in that color, with silver on the bottom, and the day it came home it had a silver stripe kit installed to cover up some of the pink paint.
Aw, heck...was the Bentley Turbo R still being made that year?... Make mine either bright red, or racing green.
I'm an american car boy so I'd never even look at an import.
Further...i'm a GM boy....
And I've got to be realistic. I'll never in a million years be able to afford something really exotic. I'll go as far as to say a garden variety Corvette is out of my reach.
So I'd probably have to go with the 1996 Trans Am with the high performance package...or the 1996 Z28 SS Camaro. It's really a toss-up. They would both probably perform about the same.
