Cyclists need to learn the rules. Bicycles are required to stop at stop signs and red lights just like cars do.
Laws are only as good as their enforcement. You can contact your local city government and cops and get the ball rolling if you want to see that cyclists get tickets (they get plenty in NYC).
This is your only recourse if cyclists running reds truly annoys you.
Mutual respect, obeying the laws/rules of the road, and most important common sense is needed from both cyclists and drivers. In fact this also applies to walkers and runners too.
Adding to the danger is the distraction of ubiquitous electronics from headphones to cell phones/texting to GPS by all who use the roads.
Think...and don't tussle over the 'right' to space with anyone. You have no idea who they are or what their state of mind is.
I'm a sometime bicyclist (when the roads can accommodate bikes) but in my neighborhood the roads are narrow because we are out in the country. This does not stop the die hard riders so I have to put up with riders taking up road space on roads where I won't ride. I always give them plenty of room but I despise the side by side riders and these are the people I would just as soon run off the road.
Don't understand why so many people are annoyed with cyclists. I would have used one if the weather in Dallas was friendlier.
Live and let live.
Cyclists didn't bother me until cycling somehow transitioned from a means of personal transportation into a sociopolitical movement. Here in town many are absolutely insufferable, self-absorbed, little to no regard for the rules of the road (blowing stop signs and then getting all indignant at you when you almost hit them, etc.), sometimes downright dangerous particularly in the downtown area, weaving in and out of traffic and blowing right through red lights. And don't get me started on the Critical Mass-holes who make it a point to actively disrupt traffic flow during rush hour.

Wow, delaying your trip by a minute or two is enough to get you mad enough to injure or kill someone? Nice!
Cyclists are not required nor supposed to be on the shoulder, mor on the sidewalk. They are supposed to be ont he road and motorists have to deal with them just like any other vehicle. Cyclists also must obey the traffic laws just like any other vehicle.
I got pulled over for speeding on my bike once. THe policeman said he did nto know whether he could write me a speeding ticket, but just wanted me to slow down. (I had no idea I was going over 25 MPH). I wish every road had bike lanes. I am glad when I see cyuclists. They are taking a car off the road, reducing traffic, pollution, dependance on foreign oil, and parking shortages. If bicycling returns as a significant mode of transportation I htink they wil have to issue bicycle licenses and ticket people for disobeying laws. They will also have to limit kids to bike trails or sidewalks (where they are allowed on sidewalks).

I just got back from a short 5 mile ride and I did not inconvenience any drivers so I thought I would respond to your rediculos post.
Side by side riders deserve to be moved out of the way, if you and they don't understand the rules of the road you should give up riding.
I will share the road with you but I will not put up with riders who want to ride side by side holding up everybody. If that bothers you too bad.

Riding side by side is dumb when it blocks traffic, I agree. Joking about killing someone - not funny.
I've participated in enough memorial rides to find no humor in that.
