Not sure what you mean. He doesn't know if the Cougar will go another 50K miles either, but chances are there will be more trouble free miles in the low milage Cobalt than in the higher mileage Cougar.
He can get more money selling the Cobalt and use the Cougar as a winter beater, then buy a new car to suit his needs in a different environment than FLA. He doesn't need a sporty car with a manual to drive pot hole ridden city streets.
It's a no bainer

Dump the Cougar, I bought one for my daughter knowing the model was a POS but she insisted so I gave in, it was her HS graduation gift. Two years later and countless trips to the mechanic I dumped it. I went and bought her an Acura TSX it was one of the best moves I ever made. Buy a set of snow tires and steel wheels for the winters for the Cobalt and your good to go!

IMO, take the one with less miles which also sounds as if it's in better condition overall, and sell the other.

I'm not "endorsing" the Cougar, but i think it's a no-brainer that you should dump the Cobalt. Your body kit is going to get banged up on Chicago/Detroit streets. Your human body is going to get banged up when you're driving with a "sport" suspension and tires on crappy roads. If you don't have much winter driving experience, driving a manual will further complicate things for you. Cougar wins, by default.

My theory when downsizing from 2 cars to 1 was to sell the car that was worth more to others. That has served me well, although in my case the one I kept, the older one, I had owned since new so it was worth far more to me than others because I knew its entire history. Still, from a completely outside perspective, I think in your case I'd sell the Cobalt.

I hadn't heard about reliability issues with those year Cougars, but otherwise I'd pick that as you prefer automatic and selling the Cobalt will give you more money for another car when the time comes. At that point if you still want a sporty coupe, there is probably something AWD you could get.

Seriously, I would research the cougar's reliability...

honestly I'd consider selling both and getting something different.

but if you don't Cobalts, do ok in the snow. Lots of f-body guys drive SS's as daily drivers.
