Well VW does win in 2 catagories in predicted reliability for 2008.The bottom of the list in small cars(VW Jetta) and the bottom of the list in family cars(VW Passat). But wait Hyundai does win in wagon/minivan-at the bottom with the Hyundai Entourage.

crb,

You need to drive the cars and find out for yourself. For me, I wanted a comfortable car that was fun to drive. I looked at every Japanese option out there hoping to find one I would like in order to make an economical choice. There was some cars I just couldn't stand to sit in because the seat design was horrible or the interior was too cheap and flimsy. I finally decided to go German for comfort (more ergonomic seats) and better handling. When you buy a car, you need to decide what trade-offs you are willing to accepts -- and trust me, there are always trade-offs.

Passat is a comfortable car that drives great. I've never driven a Hyundai, but the key there is reliability and a great 100,000 mile warranty.

Also, just because Consumer Reports rates a car as "Below Average Reliability" does not mean that the car is inherently unreliable. It means that compared to other cars in its class, it had more issues. A close friend of mine has a Passat and she swears by it.

So what do you get with Passat? A car that is more fun, better handling, but with more risk. Decided what kind of person you are. Are you the type that feels comfortable putting all your money into FDIC insured CDs or would you rather sprinkle some around in the stock market?

Greenie

P.S. See if you can rent the car for a few days to try it out! I thought I wanted a Subaru Outback, but after I rented it, I decided it was not the car for me.
